Rhymney Bridge, Bargoed Bypass – South Wales

Spanning over the River Rhymney the bridge carries the new A469 Angle Way – Bargoed Bypass, part of the infrastructure for the Greater Bargoed Community Regeneration Scheme, intended to attract commercial investment to the area.

Set amid the re-landscaped spoil of the former Bargoed Colliery, the bridge is a 127m long, four span hybrid concrete – steel ladder structure, integrally supported mid span by a parabolic concrete arch rising 25m above the valley floor. At quarter span the deck is simply supported on circular columns that share common foundations with the arch. At the abutments the deck is held semi integrally to allow for movement.

Completed 2008.
